Introducing Ashley Reece, Athletic Therapist

Ashley is a Certified Athletic Therapist and a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. Ashley obtained her Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Athletic Therapy) at Sheridan College. Before attending Sheridan, she graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Human Kinetics specializing in Movement Science. She continued her education at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition where she earned a diploma in Natural Nutrition.

Ashley is very passionate about sport and physical activity, and has always had a compelling interest in injury prevention and rehabilitation. She has worked with a full spectrum of athletes providing on-site medical coverage as well as injury management and rehabilitation. Throughout her career, Ashley has had the opportunity to work with the Pan American Games, Team BC, Ryerson Rams, Sheridan Bruins and many more.

Ashley believes that the key to rapid recovery from injury includes combining a balance between manual therapy and exercise prescription as well as practicing a healthy lifestyle.

Spring is around the corner….

March is less than a week away, which means spring will soon be upon us! Injuries are common in the spring as we get outside and more active again, but the right equipment can help you stay healthy. Check your running shoes, orthotics, and other outdoor athletic gear before the temperature goes up and you get out there in full force.  If you need new orthotics or advisement on running shoes and/or other equipment, just give us a call!

Snow Shoveling and Your Back

Just a reminder on this snowy day to be cautious when shoveling snow!
Here are some tips:
1. Don’t wait for the snow to finish falling – smaller loads are easier.
2. Use your knees, don’t just bend at the waist.
3. Avoid bending and twisting your back. Many people bend forward to scoop the snow, then twist their back as they dump the snow. Use your knees to scoop, and move your feet to turn and dump the snow.
4. Keep the heavy load closer to your body to reduce strain on your spine.
5. Remember to salt slippery areas to reduce the chance of falls.
6. Ask for help if you need it, and consult your doctor before you shovel if you have any other health concerns.

Tips to stay on top of your New Years Resolutions

Whether it’s a new diet, a new exercise program, or a new healthy lifestyle, many of us have committed to a New Years Resolution.
We hope at this point everyone is still on track, but how can we avoid slipping out of these good habits?
Here are 3 easy tips:
1. Use technology – our cell phones and other smart devices have calendars and reminder-systems built into them.  Set reminders to achieve your goals and hold yourself accountable
2. Partner up – see if a friend or family member has a similar new years resolution.  You can both be motivators and hold each other accountable.
3. Be internally motivated – external motivation can be fleeting. If the motivation comes from within, it should serve you better in reaching your goals. Choose priorities like health and wellness, over aesthetics and/or a number on a scale.  The latter items disappear once the goal is reached, and maintenance is just as important as getting there in the first place.

Fitness goals for 2016

As we approach the beginning of a new year, it’s time to evaluate how we are doing with our fitness.  Maintaining and improving our fitness in the winter can be more of a challenge, however there are many ways to work on your fitness in your own home.
