Liz
Physiotherapy Assistant
Liz’s pilates practice began at an early age. Her childhood memories include practicing yoga and pilates in the air conditioned comfort of her mother’s bedroom while growing up in Nigeria. Both in matching leotards, they would take turns selecting exercises from a book to practice. This early introduction to movement awareness left a lasting impression on Liz.
As a teenager Liz was introduced to resistance training and marveled at the body’s ability to build strength and lean muscle mass through exercise and diet. This would eventually lead her to complete a personal training certificate with Can-Fit-Pro followed by a nutrition certification.
In addition to her fitness pursuits, Liz holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Guelph and a Certificate in Adult Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. She has twelve years of experience in corporate training, which includes training needs assessment, instructional design, training delivery & management, and education consultation. Within this setting, she has enjoyed working with diverse organizations, global business units, and clients to understand their learning and development requirements, present a solution that best meets their needs, and measure the resulting business impact.
Early in her professional career Liz had an opportunity to provide consultative services within the luxury resort and spa industry. Through this exposure she was reintroduced to pilates and was once again amazed at how increased movement awareness can improve the way the body moves, feels, and functions. She had assumed that a hip fracture she sustained in a car accident years ago was sufficiently healed because she no longer experienced pain. Yet, through pilates she discovered she had a limited range of motion in specific planes of movement and some resulting postural issues. She was able to tailor her practice to improve her hip’s mobility and achieve better recruitment of the supporting muscles. This intrigued Liz and she began her pilates instructor training at Body Harmonics Pilates and STOTT Pilates with a keen interest in the application of pilates for injury management.
Liz has completed training in the full pilates repertoire: Matwork, Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, Barrels, and Injuries and Special Populations. An avid learner, Liz continues to educate herself on the rehabilitative aspects of pilates through independent research and continuing education courses. She is delighted to work with clients in this setting and has a genuine interest in sharing in their progress and success with pilates.
